Abstract:
This is side 1 of a double-sided map, covering the South Sandwich Islands and surrounding area. The South
Sandwich Islands are remote sub-Antarctic islands situated in the eastern Scotia Sea and are entirely
composed of volcanic rocks. Side 1 is a bathymetric map of the region around the South Sandwich Islands and
includes the East Scotia spreading ridge, the South Sandwich trench and numerous seamounts of the region.
The map has been compiled from a variety of data sources, but the primary data source is multibeam swath
bathymetry collected from scientific cruises undertaken by the British Antarctic Survey and the Alfred
Wegener Institute.
